BU or Cleaned, Dipped or what?

Hi,

A lot has been said about coins being " enhanced" on ebay.

No reason to doubt this dealer. Just wondered what an experienced eye made of this.

Picture's a bit small but it does look rather bright. I wouldn't be surprised if it's had a bit of a dip. Still it looks a nice coin, I certainly wouldn't throw it out of my collection if I had it.

Difficult to say if it's had a slight dipping or not. It's certainly not been polished or buffed, and as Gary says, it's a nice coin and also a scarce one. If the money's right, I would definitely go for it.

Do bear in mind, if you're a type collector not date, the 1927 is the same issue and would be a lot cheaper in BU.

There is such a difference however between all three of the terms used in your title. Dipped, in my opinion, is a million miles away from the term 'cleaned,' even though the outcome of a lightly dipped coin is a cleaned coin, or near-clean. I confess to dipping a couple of my own 20thC silver coins, and have happily discovered that you can be sensitive enough with it to still leave golden-coloured toning behind. I have said before in another post that I believe it only works really well on high-grade big-lustred coins, anything lesser and it just looks plain cleaned.

Not everyone likes BU coins, which is effectively what you are mimicking when you 'lightly' dip a toned-UNC coin. It could be argued that a very lightly-toned silver UNC, with its beautiful pearl-like-lustre shying away just underneath, is a very pretty thing, others will say the full, in-your-face, glittering-pearl is even prettier. I like them both, and can honestly say a sensitive light dip would no longer put me off buying a coin. The key thing is being sensitive...not the blanched coins in EF that you sometimes see on eBay.

With a dipped coin I only have to ask myself 2 questions...does it have an attractive big lustre (no hairlines), and do I like what's been done (has it had the Peck, Dave, or Peter treatment, or did it get Haighed?).

Thanks so much. Just received the coin, paid £ 60.00 for it. It's my second coin from this dealer. He has assured me that he doesn't do anything to his coins. I asked because he really does supply some good coins at sensible prices.

He graded this at GEF. I think it's better that that. His conservative approach to grading has given me some confidence.

The coin just looked so good thought I would get some help.

The question i tend to ask on ebay is "Has the coin been cleaned ?" .Its more of a catch all rather than "have you cleaned the coin ?"

I think I would err on the side of caution and assume that it has had a clean. Simply because, if it was genuinely that good, then the price would be nearer £150.

I think he's bought it, Nick! I can't remember what now, but I've definitely bought from this seller before, and I can't recall phil's bits particularly standing out for me, one way or the other?

That's a VERY good price! I'll add that seller to my list...

Ah, didn't realise it was GB Classic Coins - I've bought from them before, including an UNC 1921 florin for about £50, which I thought was a good price for an underrated coin.
