Hi all. In a local auction at the end of the month is a job lot of coins. This lot has a 1928 crown in it. I know these are faked but how do I tell if it is the real thing or not. Thanks Danny

If it's a good fake (Chinese) it will be very difficult to tell from the real thing. Otherwise, there are good pictures of the genuine article - the type, I mean, not necessarily that date (lots in the Crowns topic in the Varieties sub-forum here, for example).

Any reputable dealer will be able to see if it's a fake, and a reputable auction house will take back any item that can be shown to be a fake, but you need a way to prove it's the same coin you won.

Weight for a start. Assuming it's EF-ish, you should be looking at 28.35 to 28.4g. I have to say, I've not heard of 1928s being faked but I may be wrong.

Hi. Thanks for getting back to me. I will get a better look a couple of days before the auction. The auction room might not list it so won't be binding that it's genuine. I thought that Wreath crowns were faked or is it only some dates?

The 1934 in particular, as it's 3 times rarer than its nearest competitor.

The only fakes I have handled are 1928 and 1933. The easiest tells on them are raised dots in the fields, particularly the obverse as most of the reverse is filled with the design. They are generally slightly light as well (as Derek suggested). A magnet is no use as the fakes are non-ferrous, but the "ring" test is quite handy as well (as long as the saleroom do not object to you giving the rim a tap).

Hi all. Well I managed to win the lot with the 1928 crown. It was listed "An assortment of coinage and stamps including a coin album with a 1928 crown." It is 28.29g. what are your thoughts on it. Cheers Danny.

Looks okay to me (as far as I can tell from photographs).

Grade around GVF with various edge knocks and contact marks.

The $64000 question, how much did you have to pay and what came in the lot?

I do find it curious why an auction house would'nt list this seperately. However, it's their loss eventually and your gain, so as John says, what was the damage for the lot it came in?

The lot included 1897 crown-good fine,1845 half crown-fair,1883 half crown-about vf,1826 half crown-vf (exmount),1872 florin-fair,1887 shilling-vf,1915 shilling-vf, loads of silver 3d poor-vf at best,1971 proof set. Some other odds and sods to much to list. ohh and a stamp album.

390 quid doesn't Sound to bad

£320. . I'm pleased with it and I have a shed load of other coins from this lot to sort through. I enjoy looking at coins I don't collect. Some will be sold on and some kept.
