Victorian Stamps!

Recommended Posts

I don't know the first thing about stamps, but would like to learn about Victorian stamps in particular! Can anyone advise a good book to read on the subject in general, but one that maybe focuses on 19thC stamps in particular?

I'm not sure that there are many, this is the most well known catalogue for that era but I expect you already know of it!

Never heard of it, or of any other stamp book for that matter!

However, I've just bought it, and the 2013 price guide, so thanks for the link, Paulus! Much appreciated! :)

Stanley Gibbons comes up on that link, with the keywords you've quoted crossed through, as if it's 'unknown' on eBay?

Yet interestingly, RJ Marles was the guy behind the original Check Your Change and Collectors Coins series - i.e., the owner of Rotographic before Chris took over. He obviously had fingers in more than one pie! I wonder how many other collector areas he published for? Toys? Books? Diecast models? Dolls? Plates?

Ha, ha! Let me read the book, I'll get back to you! ;)

Have you ever bothered yourself?

It's all linked to our boat full of Victoriana! Victorian taps, plates, wood, cutlery, tiles, etc. You may have picked up that my head's all over the place at the minute! I'm a tad diluted right now! :)

Dad was the stamp enthusiast. I collected mint issues for a while but never really got into anything else. His main interest was Polish/Ukrainian/German occupation issues. Sadly I can't read Polish as I have four very comprehensive volumes about the things. But he picked up some Victorian stamps and covers as part of his British series.

Let me know if you might be interested and I'll take a look and see what there is, if you like. No use to me.

Now. Who'd like some First Day Covers?

Will definitely take you up on that! I want to frame up some Victorian things for our corridor, and just take an interest in it generally!

Did anyone see that VR postbox front on the bay? Sold for £135, I was SO close to buying it to make a framed wall sculpture! :)

I've got my Dads stamp albums from the 40's including lots of Vickies he the started proper collecting in the 50's when he was in the Navy. All apparently worth little.I was born in the 60's and both Grandpa's and my Dad set me off on coins/fossils/amber and nick knacks.

In my consevatory I have a glass topped table full of nice bits from fossils to flint bits.If I want to wind down that is where I retreat to.I also like trench art.I have many brass shell cases from The Great war.I have bought fossils and coins for my elder sister....better than perfume and now she wants a gold touch piece.

When I was about 10 she bought me a 1914 1/- in GEF for Xmas...beat that for a present. :)

For England and St George.I will defend my country as my ancestors did.As Winston said we will fight them on the beaches.I will be in Felixstowe in a beach tent near the pier with a candy floss and the hottest chips I have ever had.Great memories. :)
