Tried www.sjauctions.com, which is supposed to be St James Auctions, but you get " Steve and Jody "

I seem to remember something like this happened to DNW once when I tried it.

They really need to do something about that site, and Croydon Coins! £100,000 coin sold by them, and they can't keep an updated site.

Just got to the site, and its absolutely useless, many months out of date

and a waste of time, all links on it are out of date. I thought the Buyers

wallet snatch price they all charge was for a service to the buyer , but

instead they all double (at least ) the cost of posting anything, give just

about no guarantee, and no help to the buyer and even less to the seller .

The odd thing is, they actually sell some nice coins, they just need to do better by the consignors and get that website sorted out!

Edit: actually, on second thought, they should leave it just as it is! ;)

I stopped going to Croydon in about 2004-5 when I found far too many descriptions that were over-generous and downright wrong. One sale had a 1905 halfcrown described as UNC, that I suspect had a provenance of Attila the Hun given the large chop mark across the head. The coins were typically things that go quite cheaply in the larger salerooms (which is where they get much material from), listed in a generous grade. Very few things that I have bought or looked at previously were good enough to be keepers, with many uncs being 'nearly there' for example.

Every single coin I bought there was at least 1/2 to a full grade over, you absolutely cannot distance-buy with Croydon!

But if you do go you feel as if you're at a village fair!

Or primary school assembly, or amateur dramatic play...:)

Off to my first Croydon auction 4th June, perhaps it's a good thing that my coin fund is at an all time low!

I'd be there every time if I actually lived in Croydon! There are certainly some bargains, especially if you stay until the end (I remember loads of people drifting off early on, after already filling their pockets), you just have to be there and trust your own judgement (take a loupe)! ;)

Have you a reference to the catalogue - there's nothing on the web site?

No, it's rubbish isn't it, guess they might get round to putting something up there before the 4th!

You normally have to email to ask even when the auction is!

Dear All,

I hope you don't mind but thought we would introduce ourselves, we are a real genuine commission free auction site www.poundseller.co.uk we also have a selection of British coins you might be interested in.

http://poundseller.co.uk/category/?level1=Coins&level2=Coins

Best regards

PoundSeller Ltd

For future reference, on sites like this, you might attract attention with a post such as this one...most of us are always interested in new avenues and things new! But overdo it, and you come across more as a spammer!

Another tip, give us a name, not an impersonal Ltd! :)

I've stopped going to Croydon too. Last time I was there, it became obvious to me that the lower estimate was usually the reserve, so the chances of getting a real bargain were very slim. On the other hand the commission is very low and it is at least a day out but if you intend to bid on anything take a quartz halogen lamp with you...
