Smooth edge five pence 5p

Recommended Posts

Can anyone offer any information as to how I ended up with a 1991 smooth edged five penc piece in my change? The edge of the coin is smooth like a 1p or 2p, not milled like other 5p's

Is it well circulated? The milling will disappear as it is handled?

It could be use of the wrong collar die but that would probably depend on what else the Royal Mint struck in that year that had the same diameter but a plain edge. This is unlikely though.

No, it's not well handled at all. The coin has a perfectly smooth edge. To look at edgeways on, you would think you were looking at a silver one pence piece. But; to look at the coin in the palm of your hand, it looks just like any other 5p you would get in your change.
