Cromwell Halfcrown , I'm looking for a decent one

I'll vote gVF for the obverse. Well centered, possibly not fully struck up to high points with just a bit of wear. Fields and rim look nice; has an "honest" feel to it and not like the hoards of specimens that seem to show up at auction over the years - many of these IMO seem to be struck and either sequestered at time, or possibly more likely restruck. I have always wondered if it was something of a cottage industry post facto O.C.'s passing....

I'll go along with the others - GVF and a nice looking coin. Any slight detail lost is not critical for this type. If the price is right, go for it!

I think you're right, the reverse is a smidging better. Really top condition for grade, though, def GVF money overall I think.

For comparisson, graded as OBV Fine, REV better. So i'd stick with my VF grade of yours

but maybe I will try a bid based more on the VF value. It seems

many including the top Auctions and many BNTA Members are really

pushing grading to the limits you would really expect in Ebay !!

Many of the high end Dealers are extremely inconsistant on their

grading standards recently , EF "USED" to be close to mint

I've bought a few times from DNW and never had a Problem with their stuff. However, this time i would if i were to buy that coin, it could be it was consigned by a dealer with his own grade which happens and so this would have nothing to do with DNW and their opinion of the coin.

The reason i think that it's not DNW s grade is because of the shilling just underneath it in the auction, same grade as the Halfcrown, but way better than the halfcrown, Shilling Picture attached.

Just wondering if they made a mistake when writing it up?

I'd keep looking. These halfcrowns are one of the best looking coins around, plenty of history and even with the recent spink price jump, still great value.

Difficult to contest your view, as no-one can deny you have some absolutely amazing coins, but fine? Crikes you're harsh!

When you live a long way away from everyone else you rely heavily on making purchases on images alone and not seeing the real thing. I guess this builds a healthy scepticism as photos can be played with and you never get to see along the rims or see how flat a coin is on a table or its true daylight tone.

Hmm, if that's a fine, please show me which coins you might have on sale. Conservative is good!!

I recall Glendining's having VF piece is later milled appearing GEF/AU....

IMO fields are just far too "clean" for a F or even plain VF rating, and think signs of actual wear as opposed to soft strike on higher obv. points actually scarce

on this specimen. Even has lustre residual in the lettering and amongst curls to right.

I think we're all in agreement that the OP pictured coin is definately not AEF, quite why DNW have gave it that grade is beyond me,

Not a HC but a 1658 Cromwell shilling, which 'Uncle Buck' (Coinery's nickname for Bucks Coins) is selling as EF but I would grade as nVF

That's GVF for me! I'd be really interested in a number of views, as these Cromwell coins, which I think are a stunning series, are meeting with quite some variability!

Nice spot, Paulus, I wonder who he's selling that coin for?

Edit: possibly even a smidging better than GVF, I really like it. You've always got to mark Uncle Buck's coins down a notch on eye-appeal, as his images always look very 'lustry' and colourful, whereas, in-hand, the story is mostly very different!

I look at the orb beneath the cross pattee on the reverse. The wear on the horizontal line across the orb often indicates wear of the coin. No wear is EF plus. Try it.
