1840 Farthing Two Prong Trident

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I recently acquired a nice 1840 farthing with the two pronged trident on the reverse (the same as the more common 1839 variety). I haven't seen any sold in recent times so I was just wondering if anyone here had a suggested value for it. The coin is around fine but with the variety nice and clear. Thanks all!!

You'd be very lucky to get a fiver for it if it's only around Fine. That's on a good day. More likely it'd go for 99p.

Sorry about that - but grade is everything. Maybe £50 in EF, to give you an idea of the importance of grade.

It is a rare find.

I looked over 45 years for mine.Colin Cooke had only seen a couple. It is a die clash. The imprint of Vickie is seen on the reverse.I paid quite a lot for mine but had to have it.I have not got the 2 G's over 1874 but this was a major addition to my collection....I still go on :)http://www.omnicoin.com/viewcoin/947669

I am with Peter here, not a very well known variety, but gets a premium from us micro variety collectors. For info I recently sold an example approaching EF for £140

Thanks for the input guys. I must say, considering how difficult I found it to obtain one I would suggest a fiver or 99p is probably slightly too low! I am very impressed that you had an example in NEF, must surely be one of the best around? The only other examples I have known of as comparison is one that sold years ago on ebay for about £85 in almost fine and an example went on ebay a couple of months ago for £55 in similar grade but the seller didn't know what he was selling so it went to a keen eyed buyer! Thanks for the advice and I reckon I will hold on to it for a while :)

Well how about that! I stand corrected! Nice to see some micros getting the attention they deserve. Although I still collect them, I'd more or less given up on ever making money back on them.

The example that I sold and the slight upgrade sitting in my collection are both shown in the thread below.
