Hi another new person

Just signed up so thought I would say hello, I am new too all this, I started buying silver bullion and heavy mens 925 chains as a form of savings for the future back in december 2012 (Im 29 years old) I then started buying as much pre 1947 silver coins as I can afford,occasionally a nice example is found and im starting to find myself enjoying the coins from a collectors view and always hold back any better ones I come across now.

Look forward to doing more research here:) i thought id share my best find that came in with a lot of scrap pre 47 sixpence coins.

Hello and welcome, curious question, but why pre 47? Those are .500 Silver content, pre 1920 would be .925 silver content.

Thanks for the welcome Azda, I also buy pre 1920 as well, really I just buy whatever I can get at as close to spot price as I can find. generally it seems pre 1947 are closer to spot price and I see no drawbacks from when I decide to resell.

One part of me wants to buy as much weight as I can get for the lowest possible price, and the other side wants to make a collection of better examples for long term keeps.

If you keep Buying Job lots of silver you should come

Across some decenr graded coins and hopefully 1 or 2 rarities. You should maybe invest in a book incase some of what you have are rare, it has been known to Happen

Welcome aboard, good find re the G3, well done...really glad you're not scrapping everything!

As Azda said, a couple of decent books, and a good rummage around on here should help you spot some of the rarities.

Thank you for the welcomes:) I think I`m edging in that direction because I bought a proof 1994 ten pence coin simply because I wanted it hehe. Beautiful detail.

For the beginner there's two in particular (both available through this forum and no, I'm not on commission!) :

1. Collectors Coins GB (annual) - a price guide from 1797 onwards, but also with a wealth of detail about mintages, varieties, etc.

2. Guide to Grading British Coins

Both published by Rotographic - see banner advert above.

When you're more confident, there are specialist tomes we can recommend on whatever field you want to know more about.

Thanks everyone:) seems like a really great forum, i appreciate the welcomes and advice!. Looking forward to receiving this grading book as i have just remembered i also have 5kg of old pennys , half pennys and farthings ect.

Maybe i can get rid if some duplicates and lower grades and get some coins i don't already have. Really like the idea of some crowns with silver content, i have plenty of crowns cupro-nickle and lots of 50% silver half crowns but no silver crowns yet.

just ordered another 400 grams of varied pre 1947 silver, Im buying a lot, its better than wasting it down the pub lol.

I have a question guys, can you suggest anywhere good to buy plastic coin sleeves? I see they are cheap enough on amazon but are they any good?.

Or would a dedicated coin folder be better? I'm looking for something to store my better coins.

What metals are involved and what grade are the coins? Steer clear of plastic coin sleeves for copper irrespective of any claims about their inertness or not. Silver is a bit more forgiving in plastic. If average grade, say around VF, then mylar window 2x2s are ok. If mint state you could use capsules, or do it yourself slabs. You could always get a mahogany cabinet if you want to go up market. Steer clear of Whitman folders as the acid in the card will affect the coins on the rims, plus you often have to push the coins in to fit which provides for finger grease contamination. The fatty acids in the grease will mark the coins. If we are only talking about low grade coins below VF at best, then 2x2 card holders are ok. You can get staple together or self adhesive types.

I have just received the grading book, I must say its fantastic! the large majority of my coins are VF, quite a few between VF/EF a couple EF and 2 UNC 1936 threepence. I think I will get some coin capsules for anything UNC quality.

I use the 2x2 adhesive flips with windows, and keep the flips in little A5 Numis wallets, which have 6 2x2 slots per page. It really suits me, and a great 'read' in bed!
