Not exactly a bargain ;) .......but at least it's what it says it is.

I must say I have always found Semra very pleasant to deal with, only yesterday she bought some bulk lots to the Midland coin fair for me to have a look at. They usually bring the single coins, but she went out of her way to accommodate my request. I know some will say it should be in their interests as the auction house to accommodate, but this can not said for all auction houses.

Might just be me she doesn't like then........I've seen her 3 times and each has been a not so pleasant experience. Last time I'd put £3000 of email bids in for their auction and heard nothing back so repeated the process and still didn't receive the promised confirmation. So at Wakefield as couple of weeks later I handed her my printed bids only to get a surly reply that she already had them as if I was wasting her time. I didn't get a chance to ask why I'd had no email confirmation as her bidding instructions state, as she then totally blanked me to talk to someone else.

I must say that in my personal experience she is not what you would call customer-facing and has always been very abrupt, particularly on the telephone.

Unfortnately they do appear to achieve some good prices for certain types of coins, many of which I will be placing with them shortly, however, in all honesty I am not looking forward to the experience of dealing with them.

You probably just needed a little more patience. The email confirmation of your bids can take a week or two to arrive if you submit them way before auction date. The time to question is when nothing has been received and there are only a few working days left before the auction.

I've always found her very helpful. Like most middle-aged men I have a very large grumpy streak running through me so I sympathise with her having to deal with people like me day in day out.

To quote varbatim from her spiel.....

"As part of our continuing program of quality improvement, it is our policy regardless of the method of communication used (post, email, fax or phone) to return to each bidder a list of the bids we have entered into our system. We believe this will produce several benefits and prevent several potential problems. We can receive up to 10,000 individual bids prior to each sale, they are input twice, the second time by a different operative by way of verification, but we believe it may still be useful for bidders to receive feedback of what bids from them we have input.

This new service will allow each bidder to verify we have processed the bids correctly, and also, in the rare event of post or electronic communication going astray, the absence of a returned notification could indicate that the bids have not been input and may not have been received by us.

If within 5 working days from receipt of your bids you have received no notification, we strongly recommend you contact us to query the safe receipt of the bids."

Which is exactly what I did. I might be a grumpy old bugger too sometimes, but all I ever ask is people do what they promise. Not too much to ask.

After Colin G. mention her name i realised I bought several sovereigns from her in the past. Ive done it by email and her replies were VERY unpleasant. I felt like i was actually doing her some harm :) I understand im not a big spender and dont expect anyone to lick my balls. Simply being nice would be great.

The current London Coins catalogue has just under 3500 lots. I estimate that CGS slab around 1000 coins a month. So in any 3 month period they are processing 3500 auction lots and around 3000 coins for grading. Added to that there's all the coin fairs they attend. Does anyone know how many people actually work at London Coins/CGS on a day to day basis? I think it is 4 but I could very well be mistaken. I've had one or two issues with them myself and know how frustrating it can be when things don't go entirely smoothly, but it's not hard to see why these blips occur. There's an obvious flip-side to this argument however which is that a business as obviously successful as London Coins/CGS should have the money to invest in the necessary systems, training, staff, infra-structure etc. that would make these occasional issues a thing of the past.

There is Steve, Semra and Paul and then a chap in Warrington who is one of the graders. Each coin is graded by Steve, Paul and the chap on Warrington to make sure they all agree on the grade!!!! Semra seems to run the office, Paul seems to do the cataloging etc and Steve is the front man and main share holder!!! I must admit I get on well with all of them but yes I agree Semra can have her bad days but just think she has perhaps too much to do and gets over stressed lol!!! Sounds like most women I know to be fair ;-)

Over-stretched and overworked exists for no other reason than we are by nature a greedy species! If being stretched and impatient is simply about personal greed then, at the very least, this should be kept to oneself, and not lashed out upon the passer by, especially if they come bearing pots of gold! IMHO! :)

I only know Stephen - from the days when he used to attend the Midland Fair. I always got on well with him, but I don't know the others.

Ah poor London Coins / CGS..its seems by reading this thread that they are overworked, which clearly explains why whenever I deal with them they are so offhand and give the impression that they wished that they were somewhere else, doing something else and talking to someone else...I'll try that approach in my business and will let you all know how it goes.
