A 1922 Trident 'dot' on ebay listed for the price £1,669.99

Is this a realistic price? I am quite bemused

Not if he really wants to sell it IMHO. If you search dealers list there are many examples of over priced coins which they've had for years and never sold. For example; http://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?page=retailv2_details&coin=Penny+1919+George+V&uin=0017964

That's stupid. Surely they meant to price it at an OTT £325, which would be more in keeping with the inflated price they attribute to their plastic? I will do an uncirculated 1919 1d for less than 1/50th of their listed price

As has been said - some punters just try their luck on eBay with ridiculous over-inflated prices. To them, 'genuine rarity' means "it must be worth thousands!" How many 'trident dot' examples are there? They would be harder to see than a 1946 ONE' penny, as the dot would tend to disappear once the penny got to VF or less. The 1946 pennies go for between £10-£20 in average condition, but I'm still waiting to find one in high grade for my own collection. I'd estimate an EF example would cost me around £100, so I'd 'guesstimate' the 1922 at double or triple that price, no more.

Having said all that, a collector was prepared to pay £30,000 (was that right?) for an 1863 'narrow 3' penny, so there are ------s out there.

Tracyaw,

The coin you mention on eBay is mine, and is a very rare example of a variety that is seldom offered for sale. Michael Freeman commented on my coin that it is the best example he has seen, and that it is felt there are only a few known! (less than 5)! Supply and demand set the price for all rare coins, thus the price, as shown on eBay. I hope this helps explain the pricing.

RLC35, I hope I haven't caused you offence. I am new to this and wonder why some coins comman such a high price. Thanks for the explanation.

Another Odd one. I am not starting a new thread, as it seems excessive, anyway, this is a cute one:
