Fathing 1735, Strange "a" & Metal Deposit

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I bought a 1735 farthing today and noticed that the first A in "Britannia" had a longer leg than usual. Is this a variety that I did not know or only an error?

Also, on the observe, above George II head, there is a little metal deposit, I think. It is in relief like the legend. Am I right?

Thanks for the help!

William

Firstly there are so many micro varieties in pre 1775 1/4d's.

You could log it with Colin of aboutfarthings.

I will check my 35's.

possibly a die fault, dunno the methods they used to engrave them.

I would guess the raised area on the Obverse is a die flaw, whereas the extension of the serif to the A does look more "intentional" and is possibly where a die has been re-cut, but it in my opinion it would only go down as a "possible" at the moment, additional examples would need to be found before any certainty could be given...and even then it is still likely to be a best guess :)

Thanks all for your opinions about the coin, I will do a little star on the holder and I will keep it safe!
