crown of the rose

Could anyone give me more info than i already have about a coin my husband found in our strawberry field about 15 years ago it is i believe a crown of the rose 1526-44 23 carat gold with Henric 8 D G and other writing that we cant makeout on one side with a coat of arms with a crown over the top. On the other side there is a tudor rose with a crown over the top and the only words we can make out are rosa sine would like to know roughly what it would be worth too. thankyou

It sounds more like the gold halfcrown to me. Is there any way you could get a picture up so that i could firstly see if it is genuine (in the condition you describe it sounds very likely that it is, why make a repro in that low quality?), and secondly to see if i can identify it to a type.

Now from the description you give it does sound pretty worn if you can't make out the legends.

If it does read HENRIC 8 D G (and there's nothing between the D and the G, like an I), then is probably of the third coinage or the Posthumous Coinage [struck during Edward VI's reign but in Henry VIII's name].

All of the larger Crowns have different lettering, all are HENRIC 8 RUTILANS ROSA SINE SPINA (With the DEI GRA on the other side). Half crowns are HENRIC 8 DI G, or HENRIC 8 D G.

It should be between 18 and 20mm in diametre to be the halfcrown.

If it is the halfcrown then you're looking at about £100 at the least really.

Hello Carol could you re-email me on this (i accidentally deleted your email, i still have the pics, but no address to respond to).

I'm sure it's a halfcrown, i've narrowed it down somewhat as to a type. Think is i can't make out the mintmark (i need this to finally work out which issue it is from).

Could you make the pictures any bigger? (The mintmark should be on both sides, there should be one before the H in Henric...)

I think we are looking at about £100 or more, probably £130 or as much as £170.

Lovely piece of gold and in far better condition than I anticipated. But then again, I'm useless with hammered!

H R on both sides, i guess it's about 18-20mm in diametre (give or take with the irregularities of hammered coins). There obverse legend reads right for the halfcrown as DG is on the same side as Henric.

Presumably it is an example of the Second through to Posthumous coinage.

If it's a second coinage example it is of the last variety with a pheon mintmark.

I'm getting drawn towards the Posthumous issue though, duno maybe it's the style or something?

This has to be a Halfcrown. If the mintmark is a pheon, its made between 1526-1544.

The Spink Catalogue valued these coins at about 350£.
