I just spoke to them. The auction has only just finished (15.45) and the staff are on their way back to the office.

Once there they will then check bids against bidders and they hope to update the website with prices realised later today.

Tomorrow they will start to draw up invoices to send out.

How do I check final prices on their web site. I just can't find them.

When I went to the main page there was a 'Realisations' drop down from the auctions tab. That brought up a list of auction results. However they were in Excel format, so it might depend on whether you have software that can open such a file.

Plus I suspect you need cookies enables as I'm currently at work and can't get the dropdowns to function ...

They have been very good with invoices in the past. Generally posting the day after the auction by 1st class post and so I guess it will be tomorrow or Saturday at the latest.

I didn't bid this time but had a look at the realised prices of some lots. Many of their estimates are way below hammer prices. Look like that's the norm with them.

I agree, their estimates are way below, I think they mostly are...but their hammer prices are generally rather agreeable IMHO

I came home just now to find my invoice waiting for me. Hopefully the coin will arrive as promptly as I left my debit card number with them yesterday morning and payment has been taken ..

Well, my coin arrived this morning. So in answer to the original question, I think W&W's grading is accurate. I would call this good Fine, on the basis of how other examples have been graded, admittedly in the 1970s. Of course, if anyone would like to insist it's better (and I do think that it might have been graded a bit more generously by some other auction houses), feel free!

A few old and minor scratches that weren't in the description but nicely toned and a satisfactory upgrade. Weight is fine at 6.01g

The photo isn't brilliant (and aplolgies for the specks of dust!), but I was in a hurry to get it done before I go to work!

If the weight is right GF is a meaningless grade.

The coin is a beauty.

I'm sure you paid over estimate but value/desirability ...you tell me.

I'm sure yours would win a beauty contest over most.

Well done Dan. Don't be too disappointed at missing by £10. That is likely just the bidding step. There's no way of knowing if you'd have got it by offering another £20 or if it would have just kept going.

(My bid was over £100 more than the hammer price! Unsurprisingly I'm delighted it didn't go that high!)

Yes, my top bid was over hammer, so very pleased to get it cheaper, especially as my bid was cheeky in the first place!

Edit: the reserves were a little silly! £120 reserve for my lot, which was won at £660 with juice! I think that was really cheap for a rare-bust Liz shilling from an old collection!

It must be a difficult task to put reasonable reserves on every coin when probably one is a jack of all trades.

The best to expect would be to ID the S nr and use basic Spink pricing (ignoring rarity as Spink do)

Lovely coin TG! I couldn't 'connect' with your last acquisition, but this one is fabulous, a really pretty coin, it has great 'balance'!

I can't grade hammered at all, the variables are just too great to calculate a numerical value which, so called, defines a coin's overall quality!

It can be such a small thing that rockets the eye-appeal heavenwards and, it's in that zone, that there is no grade, just a beautiful historical item such as your's! Nice one, you must be extremely pleased with it!

LOL I get a similar thing from Lockdales. Kinda fun to see stamps still with 1/2p values. I do wonder if Royal Mint plc. will stop accepting such things one day. Mine got to charity shops, like the Red Cross to sell on.

Don't you mean Royal Mail plc (sold-to-the-highest-bidder)? Last I heard, the Mint had nothing to do with the postal service!

There again, both services produce tacky commemoratives for profit, make frequent errors, and ain't wot they used to be, so an understandable mistake.
