Md Find 1860 Penny, Help Needed To Id Obverse.

Recommended Posts

Hi guy's, just a couple of question's on this very worn 1860 MD find. I know the coin is worthless but i'm struggling to ID the obverse. I believe the reverse is D because of the toothed border, the E in one looks like an F but that will prob's be wear and tear. All comment's welcome, thank's jim.

It looks like the signature is 'on' the bust and the : after G of D:G: is to a border tooth (difficult to tell), which would make it Freeman obverse 2 or Gouby obverse D

Hmmm… it's not easy, but I favour obverse 3, based mainly on the shape of the bust profile, where it adjoins the border, and the rose overlaying the border circle.

Here's one (not a great pic as it's in a plastic tomb, but it is UNC85):

I was swaying between 2 and 3. The rose looks complete as in obverse 3, but it didn't look low enough.

There was an obverse (DE) that Gouby had included and then omitted that was between obverses 2(D) and 3(E) it was like a transition die, it shared similarities with both obverses.

The fishtail looks oddly cut too, not quite central but not as far left as usual on 2 and 3. Maybe just the pic.

Lovely Penny btw.

There's definitely a transitional obverse between (Freeman) 2 & 3, which has been discussed in depth here before, though I can't find the thread at the moment. I did notice the fishtail, but put this down, possibly, to the damage to the coin (heavy scratch).
