Welcome Geoff. I can't add anything to the IOM discussion but noticed your interests include amateur radio! That takes me back to the 70s, when I had a licence and used to spend my spare time building equipment and chatting on the 2m band.

Ok, well my call is m5eay which is part of my e mail. I have been licenced since 1999. with m1., then m5 the following year when I did the morse. Six months later the morse requirement was removed. I am a member of Trowbridge radio club. I don't get on much these days, I mainly used the radio in the car, but when I bought a new one I was unable to put it in the car so I am restricted to home use or the handheld.

Things have changed, I'd never heard of call signs beginning with 'M'! I had a G8 licence back in 1974, which I kept up until about 1980. After that my interests lay elsewhere and I didn't bother renewing it. I was very active in the early days though, building some of my own equipment… particularly a 400w amp with two of the now classic 4CX250B RF power tetrodes. Did wonders for the neighbours tv pic as I recall!

Garrett thanks for the welcome. I don't have cricket on my list, but I do like to watch as much as I can. My local club has several good teams in the leagues. I do support England, but enough said right now.

Just for fun, I took a look at the on-line licensing, which I see is now handled by Ofcom. Apparently I can re-instate my licence if I want to, by paying a £20 fee! There's no reason to do this, but it's interesting to know.

That's not too bad, after all it was £15 per year. But ok, I can understand that you are not interested. I keep saying that I am going to sell some of my gear, but I don't get around to it.

Having checked the website, I think he means it lasts for life in the sense that you never have to re-take the test (the RAE - Radio Amateur Exam, as it was called in my day). To keep the licence active you have to renew every 5 years though.

It used to be that you had to renew every year, at a cost of £15 and it would lapse if you did not. Now it is only necessary to renew every 5 years, but it does not lapse if you do not renew.

I like your pennies, I have looked at some of the. Interesting to see the varieties. I have some early 20thC ones, I bought a quantity at an auction some weeks back, nothing much but I did find an early copper one, not sure what it is it's quite worn. I also found what I think is a token, some of the details are readable. I must take a picture and post it, someone might know what it is.

Hi Geoff, thank you! Whatever you have, whether coin or token, we'd like to see a photo. The depth of knowledge here is excellent, so you can expect some informed opinions.

Thanks, Peter. This is the only forum that I have been in with so much activity that is relevany for me.

Most of the others are US based. I am not interested in non GB so I am wasting my time there. You may have twigged that my collecting interest in Isle of Man was sparked when I went there for the TT in 1978. I bought my first coin there and that started me off.

I still follow superbikes TT and Swindon Speedway which was my local team.

At the time I sold my collection I did not regret it, but it was not long before I did. In 2005 the 1733 proof penny sold for £140 todat to get another it would be upwards of £750.

But I am getting a nice collection now so I am happy.

I do have some GB too, pennies mainly and some silver 3d.

1978 was a great year for me.I lost my virginity and super Ipswich won the FA cup.I also had my 1st motorbike and a 1717 farthing.

Well, the tests today are so simple that any 10 year old can do it. There are three levels of licence the first level is a simple test which neeeds almost no study and the result is given at the time and you can take it again straight away. Max of 10 watts which is enough for most uses. I never use the 100 watts I am allowed, with the aerials there is no need. The network of repeaters is good too.

I also was on 27mhz., but not with any burners, although a friend of mine had one and I used that sometimes.

In 1978 I wnet to the TT with a mate and that was the start of my collection. We only had a week there, the following year we went for two weeks.

That was the last time. I shot 20 rolls of film that year in two weeks.

Well, yes, I used to always take two cameras, one for colour one for monochrome. or different lens depending on what I was shooting. These days it is a lot less frantic, I have a Pentax DSLR. I take things that usually are stillish. Plants butterflies, and bigger animals. the bike days are gone at least for now.

I still have all my gear from up to 35 plus years ago, It all works.

The Trident would be my choice. Always wanted one, never did get one. Can't have car and bike and I need the car. I can't carry many trees on a bike.
