A very odd thing has just happened! I put a snipe in on a coin that was set to finish at 17.00 and signed in at 16.50 to find it in my 'ended items' list at the £4.50 it had been sat at for a day or so!

Bugger I thought, the item had been ended early due to low bidding, bugger, bugger!

Anyway, I signed in to my sniping software which was still counting down on it! So, back to eBay, sign-out, sign-in, refresh...still in ended items!

Point is! Don't cancel your snipes in this instance, as I so very nearly did, because I won that coin for £11.50, even though it was still sat in ended items at £4.50!

eBay's such a pain in the arse! Got a nice 1860 farthing, though! :)

I'm my own worst enemy. Missed a couple dozen bids so far over the holiday period because the reminder comes in 6 or 7 hours before it ends, meaning I've forgotten all about it by the time it is due. A few bargains missed for certain, but, c'est la vie.

You really must spend 5 mins looking at this, Rob, it's so straightforward and amazing value. I'd never ever go back to that hovering over the keyboard situation again and, to be honest, if you're against a snipe engine, you'll never beat it for speed anyway.

you can have it saved on your toolbar and, whenever you've got an eBay page open in the browser you fancy a silly bid on, you just click on it and a pop-up appears asking you for your top bid...as quick and easy as that, you can then forget about it and carry on browsing...OR, drink a bottle of wine instead! :)

I'm not that desperate. There is life outside of coins and eBay................ quite a lot, in fact. Rest assured that if something ticked an important box I would not miss it. It's really more about things that I can see a profit in.

If you've been on the 'bay and spotted something in the first place (for profit or keeps), it means you haven't wasted your time, that's all! Better than putting a possible bargain in the watch list and then forgetting it! ;)

Everything I win on Ebay is via a snipe bid 6 secs before the end

So I don't look at "ending soonest", I rely on "Newly listed" - anything I snipe I put on my watch list

That's pretty much my routine when I'm firing on all cylinders! :)

I like the excitement of an auction live.I have plenty of time to change my mind.

At one time I used a stopwatch....remember the dial up days....timing was everything. :)

Everyone was on a level footing in the dial-up days, you could really grab a bargain then! I know a lot of people that did, especially when my occasional off-the-planet snipes were seconds too late and the coin remained at a eye-wateringly low price! I love the auction, but without the variables of kids falling over, postie arriving, internet failing (especially for us dongle boys)! :D

The last fair I attended I picked up 3 large date and a small date 1875 farthing priced at Heaton mint prices and R/E 1856...the same seller had a 1718 halfpenny as a farthing. The silver hammered were overpriced though. ;)

I wonder what the 1999 Krause lists a 1903 halfcrown at? I got one in VF from a New York dealer for £26 :)

Peck, My 2009 Krause (36th edition) lists the 1903 HC at $275 (167 pounds) in VF. While this is a 10 year newer reference (than the 1999), it still looks like you stole it, at 26 pounds! LOL! I have a 1903 in GF that I paid $277 for....

1998 Krause prices for a 1903 HC were $22.50, 75, 300 & 850. Don't know what the £/$ rate was though.

2000 Coincraft have it (1903 2/6) at 30 and 100 quid. 26 is a bargain no matter how you cut it...

2012 Krause have it at 160 and 500 USD. IMO, thats not too bad for a world average.

I got it for $39. To be honest, the obverse is AVF but I'd rate the reverse as VF+ ... but still a bargain :)

Actually, I tell a lie - according to my database I paid £21.27 for it :D

Recent ebay treasure steals are few and far between.

I confess that the bulk of my high grade 20th C material was obtained from ebay in the 1998-2005 period. Seems that there was no market for it at the time - also plenty was to be had such as GEF Gothic florins and the like. A good acquaintance of mine got a proof 1838 Sov. for 1200 quid and later traded it for 10k quid!

I used to occasionally patrol the US site Teletrade and it really had a massive amount of junk for sale, mainly US "widgets" as I like to call them (slabbed bits of modern schlock) but did manage the IMO accurately graded NGC58 1864 crosslet penny for 38 quid equivalent.

Sorry didn't mean to pirate the thread.

What does NGC's 58 equate to?

That is their higher grade "AU" but usually GEF if correctly graded (IMO).
