Rob, Your Inbox Is Full

Recommended Posts

Thats all. I tried PM Ing you the name of the ebay plonker because i also tried twice to reply to your email and both times it bounced back. You need to do a bit of spring cleaning to your box.

I'll try your email again

Will do. Not sure why the email bounced, maybe the local area was having remedial work done. Can't be a full inbox because there are 7273 messages in it - that's neither a power of two, nor a very round number.

Admin: Is there any way for the size of the mailbox to be increased? It's just that I have had more than 50 interesting conversations that I wanted to keep, but haven't the time or patience to copy, paste, name and file accordingly under the relevant heading.

I agree that more than 50 would be useful. However, all is not lost : if you choose the option of 'Archive this conversation', you get sent the particular conversation(s) as an email, one for each conversation, which you can then store in a suitable mailbox (I have one called ... wait for it ... 'Predecimal' :D )

As far as I can see the Predecimal currently only allows 50 messages. I think Chris would have to tweak things to change this which might have a knock on effect on the site hosting charges if everyone used their full quota.

But I'll copy him in on this in case it's a simple thing.

It does this automatically for me because every reply comes through as an email. It's all the superfluous blurb attached to the content that makes this option unappealing. You would still have to prune 95% of the incoming email, which is effectively easier cutting and pasting into a separate document until complete. It is better to have them all under one file than separate posts which you have to join up - even if you did have a folder for each conversation. It could be done, but would be a real pain in the a**e. Just having a 'predecimal' folder containing each reply would be as disorganised as my email inbox, which has a predecimal folder in all but name as I can do a search for predecimal in outlook and all replies will appear - just not joined up by thread.

Chris has said he'll work on it later, so that should help Rob.

Maybe there's no need to do anything. I've just tried using the archive conversation button and it gives a different layout to the normal notification. i.e the full number of posts made but without all the links to the conversation in the forum, AVG scan results etc. (i.e all the crap you don't want). I had assumed the forum email advising of a reply together with the content was effectively archiving it.

Although it dumps it in the inbox rather than an individual's folder for coin communications, it is still a vast improvement. :)

Another question. As it arrives in the inbox, each separate post is clear. Saved as text, everything goes into a page of continuous script without showing clear breaks between posts. Saving as HTML page gives the same layout as arrives, but I'm wondering if the integrity is maintained if I delete the conversation in the forum inbox? i.e. is the conversation genuinely saved to the computer in HTML mode given the file size in my folder is a lot smaller than the inbox file size, or does my computer interrogate the forum messages at the host when I want to view the thread? I don't want to delete something I can't recover at a later date. Ta.

Members are now able to store 1000 messages and also are able to send attachments in PMs.

Re saving in HTML and keeping the structure so that there are no externally hosted links, images etc: I think there is a way to save an absolute copy of the page locally, but I don't think it's the default in IE. In fact, as the forum uses php (and cleverly displays itself instantly as html) with a database behind it, I'm not entirely sure if saving a hard copy of such a page is possible!

I'm not sure if that requires a thank you or not as I'm now completely confused.

Saving as a text page is no different to viewing a very long txt msg w/o punctuation (whatever that abbreviates to), i.e. it's bl***y difficult. Any way of saving a complete thread in the message box with clear separation of each successive post is what's required. If anyone saves messages - how do you do it? I am using Firefox and outlook.

Experiment by saving a whole page of the forum (this page for example). If there are save options, chose the one that looks to imply that it saves everything and not just the basic html - which should also result in it saving a wee folder full of sundries such as images and the like.

To make sure that it's saved everything: Unplug your internet connection and open the html file of the page and see if there's anything missing or weird looking.

That's what I'd do. I have no experience of doing it in Firefox though and only distant memories of trying it years ago with IE.

There's a useful thing in Safari which has an option called 'Reader' (but it's not there in this forum sadly) which when you click it, opens the page as a text file overlay with just the relevant pictures in it, no adverts, no extraneous or irrelevant stuff. You can then Save the overlay as PDF via your Print dialogue, which is a whole lot less file space used than saving a page as a web archive.

We can now have up to 1000 conversations Chris - from 50? Wow.

I had webspace restraints/extra costs with the old hosts. They were taken over and eventually became utterly incompetent in July 2012. Now it's hosted by a bloke in Gravesend and there are less restrictions and more space etc, as well as an excellent service and lots of features for me to play with.

Tried that and it seems to work ok. i.e. a saved html file is genuinely saved as it appears in the download and not just a link. Thanks.
