Business Advice On What To Do With A Lot Of Old Coins

Recommended Posts

Hi.thank you for letting me join your forum,I hope you dont mind me asking your advice about coins.

My shop in has recently closed due to ill health. After the clear out I have about 2 kilogrammes of Irish and British coins, all demonations pre and post 1972.

I would like to start a small business from home selling the coins.I'm not sure how to do it.Do i try sell framed sets of coins, sell them individually?

Any advice would be great. :)

You could probably have a look at eBay and see what works and what doesn't.

Welcome to the forum and hope your health improves!

Cheers Garrett

It really depends what the 2Kg is. That weight, if the coins were of high grade and included rarer examples, could represent significant stock to build a dedicated business. On the other hand, if the coins were of poor, circulated quality with no rarer examples, then it might represent little more than scrap value. We really would need more information.

I'm sorry to hear about your health. Was your shop in any way coin-related?

Hello Turbo, opening a shop is'nt as easy as having 2 Kilos of coins, you really Need too know what the coins are and their value to even stand a Chance. Your best bet is to buy some books on the subject first of all, then have a read around here (especially on the grading subject) then go through your 2 Kilo bag.

Just as an aside, having 2 kilkos of coins stored in a bag won't be doing them any good, they'll be knocking against each other levaing marks all over them thus reducing any value.

Welcome to the Forum :)

Perhaps take a pic of them spread out. Or list a cross section of them by year, denomination .. And we can have look and get an idea of what your talking about..

Thanks everybody for the friendly replies.I'll just have to get stuck in and sort them out.Our shop wasnt coin related,we sold Irish and Celtic souviners and gifts,we had been in business for 52 years and the coins collected over that period. Thanks for the help.

Take it easy. :D

Hi,it took me about 3 hours to sort the coins out,my hands were bogging afterwards! There are half pennies, pennies, threepences, sixpences, shillings, florins and half crowns.Mostly british, some irish. The british coins are George fifth and sixth and Elizabeth the second. The irish coins are from the same period.

I have had a look on Ebay .There are various coins for sale/auction usually for £1 ti £2 so I dont know if it is worth the time spent to list them on Ebay.

Any ideas guys?

If they are rubbish of which they appear sell as a job lot.

A circulated 1950 half crown is worth diddly.

Or give to a charity.

All pre 1947 silver coins are 50% silver and sell well on ebay.

It might be worth buying collectors coins GB for about £6 and check the dates.
