Their I.T. function / department is the worst...dont even try to talk to them either ....the totally bored sounding Eastern European bloke that you always have to speak to clearly should be doing something else as in my experience he shows no interest at all in what you are saying to him, mind you, thats probably the corporate line as the other bloke who owns Spink has no interest in UK coin collectors either......I really miss Paul Dawson.!

Anyway, I have to say that there are a few some nice pieces in this sale....I sold my entire 40 year collection last year between DNW / LCN / SPINK / St James's (I like to spread the love...) to fund my retirement and I said, "thats it, no more coins".......well, that didnt last long...

Interesting. Did you strategically place your coins into specifically chosen auction houses or was it somewhat arbitrary?

Well, I like to think it was mostly strategic inasmuch as over the years of buying and selling with these companies, I had what I personally considered to be a reasonable view of what I believed to be the strenghts and weaknesses of each of these auction houses, in relation to what I was selling...also they were all amenable to doing a deal as the value of the total consignments in each case was quite high.

Also, part of me didnt want to put all my retirement fund in one basket ....I did some due diligence, as best I could, on each of them in terms of their financial situations. You can never take that for granted these days ..especially as the sales process is quite prolonged...i.e you have to consign a month or two prior to auction then you have to wait another month or so to get paid...and then they all pay by cheque so another period before clearance....you are waiting 3 - 4 months to get your money....a lot can and does happen in that time....so I figured it would be unlikely that all 4 of them would go bust at the same time !

Overall I was pleased that I did consign the majority of the collection to auction and certainly regretted not selling all my coins through auction as the ones that I sold privately in the early days to dealers and collectors a like,I realised was a financial mistake in terms of selling them too cheaply...I could have got a lot more at auction.

PM me if you want to know any more.

I'm still waiting for the sale entitled "The property of a Postman"

IT looks like they are going back to their IT Department and using their own auction Software again. Oh well, looks like another Fine mess Stanley

Some beautiful coins in the sale. The Reddite Crown for example….. !

Wow, lovely coin and a whopping price to accompany it. I see Spink owned this at one point too..

My first (and somewhat arbitrary) guess at auction houses strengths..

LON : pennies and coppers, encapsulated

DNW : milled silver

Spink : all rare coins but mostly hammered

StJames : milled and hammered gold,

Baldwins : tokens, proofs and patterns

Fairly much ....also did well with DNW on foreign , particularly the gold....I never was much of a fan of Baldwins...when I was a young less well off collector I always found them aloof and arrogant....so for the best part of 40 Years I chose never to spend a penny with them...

Pompous is another word for Baldwins! I feel the same way about them!

Has anyone received a proper catalogue yet that you can use in hand at your leisure rather than fighting an indifferent website?

Got mine yesterday. One must-have and three would-likes (four if I can get the Reddite crown for a hundred quid or so...)

I think it would be best if they stick with the saleroom. It always works.

Just been following the St.James's. Henry VIII sovereign, £235K hammer, so just over £290K all in. Ouch.

Just got to my desk and checked St. James. Luckily I missed the only three pennies as I've spent way too much recently!

How did you see the price of the Henry VIII sovereign, Rob? The Salesroom just states 'not available for on line bidding' and gives no selling price.
