Looking For A Value

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm new here so apologies if this is in te wrong area.

I have a 1/4oz gold £25 bullion. In box with two whiskey miniatures and certificate. It was one in a famous grouse competition in the 80s. Looking to get a value for the coin! Phoned a place called scot mint who offered me £200 for it, does that mean the coin in worth round about £400? Any help getting a value would be greatly appreciated

No, that means the coin is worth round about £200! Sometimes for slow movers coin dealer may have a 50% mark up, but for gold coins that's not really possible as the gold bullion content sets the value and gold is always easy to move on but has a minimal profit margin.

You don't mention the date, so I'll assume 1980s. They started in 1987. Nearly 30 years later and the packaging will be pretty insignificant as there are no serious collectors for which the packaging/promotional material etc play much of a role.

1/4oz gold is worth pretty much exactly £200 at the moment. A coin dealer would pay £200, remove/discard the packaging and hope to sell the coin for £220ish. Then drink the 2 whisky miniatures!

More of a commemorative that happens to be bullion than a coin by the sound of it. I suspect there are few collectors for that sort of specific product, so as Chris says, the value of the gold is what matters.

£200 sounds about right, but if the certificate confirms the carat of the gold you can double check here: http://www.hattongardenmetals.com/sell-scrap-gold.aspx They offer a fairer price than many.

If you're willing to take a chance you might get more on eBay, though there are no guarantees. Of course, whatever you do, avoid high street gold stalls. They will offer you a lot less.
