Sideways 8 1838 Groat

Recommended Posts

A little surprised to see Spink values this at £ 200 in uncirculated, the regular 1838 at £180.00. Would have thought the sideways 8 much scarcer. Any thoughts?

Mark

CCGB2014 says £300 BU, and that one certainly looks a lovely grade.

Chris,

Thanks for that. Must be rare for CCGB to price higher than Spink. Smile (I'm on my I pad)

I think you are nearer the mark.

This one is as good as it looks with nearly full lustre.

Regards

Mark

Cleaned in the past, as it looks very bright? But not that it really matters that much for a peach like that.

Spink don't have a clue on some things. The 1921 shilling with the first obverse, is much rarer than the price differential with the normal type listed in the Standard Catalogue.

It might be a good idea to check out what they have been selling for at auctions (if you've not already done so).

cheers

Garrett.

Garrett,

I have. Trouble is I can't find one as good as this to compare.

Do you happen to have one?

I seem to recall there being some on a regular basis on the older SNC. Hate to use the word cleaned in this case - dipped possibly more likely IMHO.

Definitely not cleaned, at least not in the traditional sense! However, it must have had a very, VERY, minor/sensitive dip...though it will take on a very nice patina over the next few years...not that I'd personally be afraid of zipping it up in a flip and living happily with it 'as is'! Still a nice lot of lustre going on on this coin!

Yes, I do - but only VF. In all my search through dealer trays etc, I never saw another one. I do remember meeting Paul Wincott in Warwick years ago, who triumphantly showed me 3 BU examples - he'd just bought them privately, paying £60 apiece which was over the then Spink book price, claiming he could get £200 each for them without any difficulty.
