George V 1936 One Penny

Recommended Posts

Over the years, I have been picking up various coins from various places. Most of the coins are the basic run of the mill foreign coins that people may come across... however... I came across this coin... sadly someone had punched a hole thru it to wear as a necklace.

The best way I can describe this coin it that it is a basic George V 1936 One Penny coin. However, instead of being made of copper, it appears to be made of brass. It apparently has not seen much circulation because the coin is in extremely fine shape showing ALL details as if it was minted yesterday... well... except for the small hole that is half obliterating the second "T" in the word "BRITT". Where the hole is punched thru the coin seems to be this same gold color. Maybe it is only plated. Looking at it carefully I may see a copper center.

I really dont think this coin is worth much but I was curious since I cant find any reference to a brass version of the 1936 coin.

One thought is that maybe that actually created a medallion from the coin back when King George died in 1936.

Any Help Is Welcome.

Todd,

You're right, no pennies were made in any other metal than bronze delibrately, but I wouldn't be surprised it someone had plated it as a momento of some kind, especially as that was the year the king died. If you register you can post a picture.
