eBay Query (selling advice)

Recommended Posts

hey, I've recently sold an item with some value on eBay and 10 days later am still awaiting payment. I've sent several messages asking for payment, should I open up a case regarding non payment or just leave it and advise I'm putting it back up for sale. Ideally I'd like to open a case and relist in any case (I'd be loathe to send it to them now) as I know I'll sell it again, however I wouldn't want to open a case and then have to send it to them. This has never happened to me before, so not really sure how to go about this. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Rich

Rich, normally eBay chases payment for you (for me it's after much less than 10 days, but it may be configurable / a setting) and after a short while informs you that you can re-list or make a 'second-chance' offer (to the under-bidder). Have you had no messages about it from eBay themselves?

I think you'll have to file a case to get your final value fees back! Or at least you needed to a year ago, the last time I was active on there?

This is still true, but (for me / my settings) EBay automatically opens a case after a set number of days

Technically ebuyers are allowed 7 days too pay regardless what any auction says. If you relist without filing a claim you'll lose your fees plus the buyer could still leave you a negative. Open a claim now and you must wait 4 days before closing it and claiming your FVF back, before you do close it, leave a feedback to the effect he was anon payer because if you closeit first you cannot warn others the buyer was a non payer

Thanks guys, I've opened the case - it offered me the chance to turn on the 'automated case opener', so it looks like you have to do it the first time you open a case.

i would open a case after 5 days as i think its Long enough, you don't want to piss a buyer off by opening a case after 2 or 3 days as buyers know they have 7 days to pay. I generally pay within 24hrs of buying something anyway or else email the seller if it will take longer, but some People, such as Scott mentioned in another post somehwere sometimes don't see that they've actually won something and have a bill

Two of my shops are configured to open a case after three days. In several years of trading and tens of thousands of transactionsI've only ever had two people complain. I think most people know that they should be paying up and opened cases are usually closed within a couple of days as a result.

If you read ebay rules on payment it states a buyer is allowed 7 days to pay. I think opening cases after 3 days is a little pushy in my opinion, i would certainly open one after 5 if a buyer had'nt emailed too say it would be delayed or payment would be made on a certain day.

I'm well aware of all the rules. Many traders have their shops automatically configured to open a case after three days. I'm happy with just the two complaints out of all of the instances where this will have occured.

I don't think it's pushy really. Look at it from the sellers point of view, we're currently doing several hundred orders per month, I expect to be around 900 ish in november. Is it fair to keep the seller waiting? Particularly when all of our listings are buy it now etc.

Ok course its fair to keep a seller waiting or else there woild'nt be a 7 day rule, it would be a 3 day rule. Plus it also gives time for a buyer to say NO which in turn would save the sellers time of posting/packing, trips to post offices and saving fuel etc. in larger businesses buyers normally wait 3 months before paying an invoice

There are some very large businesses trading on ebay these days. However find e one, just the one will do that will accept payment after three months on a buy it now auction. You're point there is somewhat moot in context.

Yes there is a seven day rule, but why then can yoiu open a case after just three days? lol

If you read the ebay rules you will see that commiting to buy is a binding contract, so you've made a second moot point when referrring to buyers who say NO after placing a bid etc. I fully apreciate that there are certain very specific instances where a bid retraction can be made. But again these are not relevant in context. It would be a foolish seller indeed who packed and shipped goods without receiving payment via an ebay member indeed! You wouldn't be covered by either ebay or paypal seller protection policies for a start.

My point did'nt regard ebay, it was bigger businesses in general. A BIN is obviously different as they want money there and then, the talking point was auctions and NOT BINs As for opening a case after 3 days, yes this is true, but you can't close it until the 7th or 8th now can you lol

Exactly, that's why I used the word 'moot' twice as it's irrelevent to this discussion. ;)

Incidentally the rules for BIN's and auctions are the same in this context, so I'm resisting going for the hat-trick at present... :P None of our 1200 or so BIN listings demand payment immediately. Though I believe you can set your settings so that listings can be set for immediate payment, very few people do though as you really want your customers to browse your shop and purchase multiple items ideally, this would cause an issue for many as customers wanting multiple items would pay multiple P&P charges potentially.

You'll find too, as previously stated, that when you do start opening cases people tend to pay up sharpish. It's very rare that they ignore this as they receive a strike against their account. Some sellers including myself have their shops configured to reject bids from buyers with so many such strikes against them so you can avoid the timewasters. Slightly off topic, but it could be of interest to some in the future when coming across bad payers etc. Perhaps much less relevent to small volume sellers.

I'm still waiting for a Hyundai rear light from a Korean Ebayer.

It was £87 from Korea or over £300 in the UK.

They are keeping in touch blaming DHL for returning the unit to Korea.

(I've only just received the customs invoice)

I'm also still waiting for a rocking horse crown from the UK.

I got it for £9 delivered AUNC...I was going to flip it.

3 weeks since I paid.

Moot what you wish. As it stands ebay (whatever you say) gives buyers 7 days. I believe that is correct unless you can point us to something in the ebay small print that states otherwise? NO, thought not. :)

I think I'd stand about as much chance of that as you would in pointing me in the direction of where I ever disputed that!:lol::lol::P

Seven days without payment is still very bad form. I'd never consider leaving a seller in the lurch like that!
