C2 Pattern Farthing?

Recommended Posts

OK, out of my comfort zone, but found this whilst browsing for C1 copper farthings on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PROOF-IN-MINT-CONDITION1665-SILVER-PATTERN-FARTHING-CHARLES-II-/181588290800?pt=UK_Coins_USA_RL&hash=item2a47816cf0

Relative to the price of the top-end copper C2 farthings, this doesn't seem off the planet. Period? Real? What? anyone for a really quick potted history on this?

A beautiful looking thing, I have to say!

IMO about £150 too much.

But there cannot be many about in that grade so the guy has a right to go for a big price.

Superb coin by the way.....

Firstly what were you doing browsing for Chas I farthings ;) I have just acquired a nice little collection of these, which I have got to sort through.

Comparatively these can be reasonably cheap when compared to the currency issues. Trying to find a decent currency issue for this period however is a challenge, whereas these are all specially prepared patterns so tend to be nicely struck. Plenty of varieties. I have to admit compared to other prices out there they are starting to look more appealing. This one appears to be BMC407 which appears to be the most common of the patterns, with the exception of BMC 492 which Peck believed to be a medalet rather than a pattern.

I want that.

yea the prices compared to currency are not that wide of the mark.. but early milled high grade currency? hard to come across.

Thanks, chaps!

Anything really high-grade and nice with the farthings, Colin?

It is a tempting one. There are a few Peck 407s about this is a really nice one. The seller originally had this listed at about £700ish I think, so has made a small reduction just recently. Hmm. I claim the four seas.

I bought them mainly to add to my collection but there will be a few duplicates, once they are sorted, I will drop you a PM :)
