Yes, I'm aware that it is thought to represent the total tonnage at that point, but there ought to be a reason for the second identical figure. It's difficult to see a reason for saying the same thing twice.

Maybe in those first two years, the figures were merely scratched on when a given batch target was reached. In the later years, possibly completion of part targets were scratched on.

Who knows? - in the absence of absolute definitives, all we can do is speculate.

I think total tonnage is right, and it could literally just be the wont of human nature to fulfill something, putting 40 or 99 on it's own doesn't give you the sense of reaching a milestone, whereas putting 40/40 or 99/99 is definitely more satisfying.

Can anyone explain the significance of this penny for me? Not just why it went for 9k but also why the numerator is larger than the denominator?

Also, what is diagonal bar between the lighthouse and the shield? There's die clashing going on in front of and behind Victoria's neck, both caused by the folds in Britannia's dress but the diagonal bar seems to match up with empty space on the obverse.

Good spot! This penny has everything going on, die clash to the neck, die clash by the hair ribbon, die crack from the rim to the N in PENNY, die cracks running through PENNY itself and the strange marks that you've spotted too. It's hard to tell just from the pictures but it doesn't look like a clash because it looks incuse and the other die clashes are all in relief, and as you say it doesn't match up to anything from the obverse.

Any guesses?

Hm, I thought it was raised rather than incuse but as I look at the image I can't say for sure what it is now. If it is incuse then I guess it can be explained as oddly specific and accurate damage.

Yeah it's not definitive because the photos only let you zoom so far before becoming distorted, it does seem like a really strange place for damage to occur and so neatly done as well. I've checked probably 30 or 40 more since you mentioned it but I can't find anything similar. There are a couple of coins with die cracks around the same place but they always lead directly to the rim and over the lighthouse. Your guess is as good as mine :P

Thanks to you and Rob who initially mentioned it - a very interesting article.

Hi All, thought I would make sure I stuck this here as it has to do with PENNIES!!!!!!!!!!Dont want to upset any more of the natives.:P

Anyway, was it anyone of the forum members who got this lot: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272094937969?ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1435.l2649

Would be very interested to see if there really was an 1954 Penny!!!!!!!:blink::o:D(Think she may have made an error!!!)

I bid but missed out at the end as I lost connection.

Haha wise move Brian

I'm reckoning she's made an error, because she didn't list any 1964 pennies (if that makes sense)

Pictures are terrible as is usual for eBay, the high bid has surely got to be for the 1951 and maybe the 1935. A bit of a gamble with those pictures though.

Have to say i was bidding for the 1951! Had made my mind up that there definately wasn't any 1954!!!!!! Also still looking for an QEII with waves missing so buying a bulk lot here and there when its reasonably cheap isn't to bad :D

I too check a couple of '67s every now and then for the same error, Richard has given us both that bug haha :D

I'm starting to wonder if it is unique, it would be interesting to know if any other member has seen or owns an example of it too.

Surely this is just die wear/fill? There are many examples of weakness in varying degrees for this reason.

Well this was what I was thinking too, that or over polishing. But I'm yet to seen anything in between this and a normally struck one and I've checked quite a few in that area since finding out about it. Having said that the lighthouse itself is extremely weak which does give credence to the theory that it's just die wear.

Even it is just wear or fill doesn't really bother me. I am still looking for an example. I have been looking for quite a while and like Nordle haven't found anything near!

A Very Happy New Year folks!!!!!!

Before I say anything else, I wish Peter well. I am heartbroken for the loss of Mrs Peter whom most of us know very well. She will be truly missed.

Thanks for all the messages that I’ve received from the forum members (especially Pete, Dave, Gary, Hazel and Jerry). I’ve been a bit busy lately and I have had far too much to tackle owing to a (failed) shot at emigrating. School, home, job the works :)

I have not plugged any gaps last year but have managed a dozen or so upgrades including this one https://www.spink.com/lot-description.aspx?id=15006000529

Lastly Richard lovely site I must say and some real dollies you have on your site. I promise to be back soon.

Happy hunting all.

Hi Prax,

great to hear from you, and that is a lovely penny, I'm still after a decent one of those.

I don't know if you come to any of the South Wales and Mon Numismatic Soc meetings, but I an giving a short presentation on the Victorian bronze pennies at the Feb meeting, might be quite local to you, nothing new or earth shattering, they are just desperate for speakers and I got volunteered. Will try to bore them with micro varieties.

Jerry

I can't seem to want to use past tense there. Can imagine how difficult it ought to have been for Peter!!!

Jerry, I am in the City these days. I remember how I used to flock to Newport every first Monday of the month - me and a bloke called Paul Long from Jacob's Gallery on Canal Wharf. Paul used to be into hammered coins and me into bronze pennies. Good times :)

Looks like the next LCA is one for the Penny Boys. Just spoke to Mr Gouby who is going along as well. From South London the usual Stan, Jeremy, Tom and I should be going. Should be a cracker of a sale.

I am going to send your wife flowers, a bottle of Prosecco and a Dirty Dancing DVD to persuade her into dragging you to Spain during the first week in March. Far too much competition for the next LCA ;)

It's becoming an expensive auction before all the lots have even been listed! And you just added an extra 4 names including yourself. Oh god  haha

Wow, sounds like a watching affair with all that competition; too bad they are not live on the 'net!

Can you even listen in live or is that not available either? I know it's been mentioned many times but they are really doing themselves an injustice.
