Found an F14...

Yes, well done. I actually think that Freeman marginally underestimated the scarcity of these.

I agree, and ironically even rarer in the lower Fair - Fine grades.  Most that exist seem to be quite high grade, maybe EF to A.Unc - I think the theory is they were a notable difference to the usual LCW under shield even in the 1860's and were largely wheedled out at the time, leaving even fewer to circulate more heavily. It took me years to find one too!

Clicking on the link only brings up the left hand side of the coin for me - it's the right half that will tell us the obverse type.

Actually, ignore me - done some more research, it is a 1. Let's call my consideration that it was a 1* confirmation bias...

Nope - access denied.

I've given you access and will change the settings too. Speaking with another person who focuses on penny varieties, the knot in the bow would indicate it is just a plain old obv 1. The chances of it being anything else were slim to none really!

I agree that it is obverse 1 rather than 1*, the gaze is forward rather than downward, and the rim is too thin. But they are out there, I have a couple of Ebay examples in low grade and a nice AEF F763 that was advertised as F6 at Lockdales a few years ago, less than £200; keep looking.

Referring to the F14 mentioned above, I had been watching this one for a week out of interest (I already have two unc examples) and must admit to surprise at the outcome. There clearly is demand out there, which comes back to my comment on rarity/ availability.

I was also watching that with interest. I am surprised, given the good reputation of the coin dealer selling it, that it either wasn't identified as, or indeed promoted as an F14. I actually commented to a fellow penny collector how surprised I was to find two on ebay at the same time in close succession.

I agree, many years since I've seen one for sale on Ebay. As like waiting for a bus and two turn up together!

A couple of 1855 Pennies both really hard to find in grades above VF ,both purchased not attributed.

DOT on Forehead & Three colons after FID.

Nice finds Pete, not easy ones.

As you say, the extra (half) dot after FID does indeed seem to be a repaired colon i.e. was once a purposeful upper dot in the colon. One of these was sold by London Coins in June 2016, and their accompanying text said:-

“1855 Ornamental Trident, with a small raised dot between the colon dots after FID giving the impression of a 3-dot colon”

Personally, I do not think they should have used the words “giving the impression”.

This is unlike the 1859 penny, which I believe I have seen sold as ‘having an extra colon dot after DEF’, when I am sure it is just a spurious roundish mark…….a bit like the 1855 dot on forehead.

I attach close up pictures for reference.

Sadly the ‘More Pennies’ thread seems to have far less activity since Mike Hopkins (1949threepence) is no longer adding his posts. I wonder if anyone knows why he dropped off the radar last September, after being such a useful and regular contributor.

Hi, could i get a helping hand identifying which Freeman die pair i have. I am pretty sure the reverse is D (but not positive at all), I'm much less sure in calling the obverse 6.

I don't have Gouby's penny book (altho interested in buying a copy), so no idea how that would identify this, though I'm interested to hear his catalog number for this too.

This is my first 1860, I don't yet have it in hand, I just paid for it.  I may need to make a few posts in a row for pics.

Thanks so much.
