Also curious to see what Rob has to say about the 53 -- there seem to more of these than was originally thought.

True I have come across 3 1953 mules now.

What is the 1953 penny mule ? How did it come about?

It came about when the Royal Mint were trialling the Elizabeth II reverse, as they used the George VI reverse, which was toothed. They produced a very small number before making the design fit as beaded for both obverse and reverse.
