Erm i just hada thought, i wonder if they were trying to pass the fake £2 coin off as a silver Proof? hence the gold coloured paint?

As if they'd even know silver proofs existed, and as if it'd fool anyone who wanted one. Maybe the brass corrodes or something, I don't know, maybe it was to add weight or to change the conductivity, so they get accepted in machines.

You never know Chris you never know! Maybe it's someone who's got some experience in the coin world and that was one of their early forgery attepts. Perhaps they are working on a whole load of fakes aimed at collectors. Proofs and whatnots, but perhaps they thought to try a few business strike ones first?
