Auction Houses?

I have several hundred shillings and florins dated from 1839 to 1919. Most are F but there are quite a few VF and EF. Is one of the auction houses like Spinks or London Coins a good way to sell these to get good value for them? I appreciate any advice you may have for me. Chris

Hi Chris, welcome to the forum! Those in Fair grade are unlikely to fetch more than their silver values, unless they are rare dates or varieties, those in EF or better will fair a good deal better ... so it all depends on exactly what you have really! Any chance of a list with your estimates of grades, or better still, pics?

Selling as a job lot will fetch little.

I would suggest and recommend letting Chris Perkins (who owns this site) a chance to give you an offer.

He will be fair.

If you can list what you have and produce a few pictures I'm sure it will be to your benefit.

Spinks (nor Baldwins nor any of the big names) would not look at them, but London Coins might throw them in as a job lot.

Having said that, yes I agree Chris should be given first refusal.

My main problem is the coins are in the UK and I only get over occasionally. It's also a small world as I note the book I bought to begin educating myself is actually authored by Chris Perkins!

So after consulting his Collectors Coins 2014 book, it looks like the shillings I have that may be decent are a G/VF 1862, a few 1902 EF, a 1903 EF, a few 1904 EF, a 1905 VF and EF, a 1906 EF, a 1907 EF, quite a few 1908 EF, and a few 1909 EF. Unfortunately pics will have to come later but I will try to arrange. Do smart phones take good pics, otherwise what do people use?

I would be pleased to have Chris Perkins take a look and will contact him before I next plan a trip over.

Chris, the coins you mention all sound very worthy, particularly an EF 1905 shilling. You can take superb pictures of coins with smart phones, cameras with macro lenses may be needed when close up detail is required.

The key to their value will be their exact grade, since there can be a huge difference in value between, say, a VF 1905 shilling and one that is truly EF.

Some indicative pics would definitely be helpful, if possible

The Obverse is "Fine", and the Reverse is "About Fine - Fine". Thus the coins as a whole would probably grade "Fine"...IMHO..

I have an PCGS AU50 that I would sell for reasonable, unfortunately to only the Left side of the Atlantic. I'd have to dig for it and will give the PCGS cert number if interested.

I looked at both pictures and nothing registered as unusual. My brain was fixated on grade, rather than the king's effigy itself.

What's really interesting is we all do this, and likely 'sub-consciously' fit into the world around us in the same way...presuming an emotion or a particular reaction from others, according to our expectations? Same as adding words that aren't even there in a psychology experiment!
