potlings

Good evening.

Recommended Posts

Just joined so thought I would be polite and say hello. I have been browsing a few coin forums but this one seems to be one of the more interesting and knowledgeable ones- and has some amusing posts too! I have been collecting coins since my feckless youth, sometimes more, sometimes less depending on disposable income.

I will admit to be nostalgic for that youth when I would save in order to get a fivers worth of mixed silver from the local Midland Bank and sorting through every bit of available change looking for H and KN and Bun Head pennies. Happy days! To be honest though never found anything dramatic except a few good quality shillings from the 1930s and 40s which I still have. Taking part was the important thing anyway!

My collecting has generally been a little haphazard, collecting whatever I liked and could afford. However more recently I have found myself becoming focused on collecting florins and that is where I think I will stay (for a while anyway).

Thats me so hello to you.

Welcome.

Florins are not the easiest to collect if you want mint state pieces. If you do - then the best of luck. If you don't, you should do ok. :)

Welcome aboard potlings! I guess we don't need to introduce ourselves, as you've already had a good look around! :)

You've done the right thing choosing pre-decimal, however, best education in coins you'll ever receive! ;)

It's true! :D

Thanks for the replies. Personally I think them mint state Gothic florins are as sexy as hell. But then again so is Mila Kunis and I can't afford her either! ;)

I want a mint state Godless and haven't seen one in the past 6 months. I thought I just wasn't looking hard enough.

Hello Potlings.

There was a really nice 1856 slabbed PCGS 65 in London Coins 117 (2007) which I stopped bidding on and have regretted ever since. I haven't seen one like it since. Super coin with a greenish tone.

Rob,

This sounds like the 'fishermans one that got away' , what did you bid up to? Do you regret not going higher?

It finished at over 400 with the juice, but that was when they went for 200 in a lightly bagmarked unc. Yes I do regret not going higher.

Well Rob I think there is a lesson there. If it really is choice overbidding a little may be no bad thing. After all they don't make em any more. Suppose the art is to separate the good from the 'also rans'. Of course I'm know im not teaching you anything you don't know.

Hence the reason Rob beat me to that Liz 3d this week. I got the attached in a job lot of 7 coins, the others were also high grade but i was mainly bidding on the florin, the rest had no interest for me, so selling those off reduced the price of the florin :)

This one was in a DNW sale last year, described as EF or slightly better with a 150-200 estimate, i was interested until it reached the dizzy heights of 700 hammer

Well this is all good to know anyway.

It puts certain coins into perspective.

Don't want to be getting into bidding wars at auctions.

But jump onto the next nice one that comes along seems to be the lesson here.

The EF from DNW is the sort of coin that would grade very well in an NGC holder or something. I have seen a few florins around the MS63 mark that show wear but seems to be all about the surfaces with those lot and nice surfaces it does have. Not so keen on the edge knock though.

Hello Potlings.

Well I have a really good one that's going up soon. For all the reasons stated you normally have to make compromises depending on how deep your pockets are.

Mark
