What is the "value" of an 1865 Farthing "Fat 8" coin?

Recommended Posts

I bought an 1865 Farthing on Ebay for a good price and submitted it to NGC for grading. When it came back, NGC graded it as AU55. But they also said it was a Fat 8 (thicker 8) in the date. NGC does not offer a price guide for this coin. Is it as rare as the 1862 Fat 8 coin? What is the catalogue value? I am not having any luck in the states for finding any value to it so I am calling on the experts overseas to help out. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a catalog you guys use the most to determine varieties, mintage quantities, values, etc. of British coinage?

Thank you

The fat 8 is the more common variety, with the narrow 8 being scarcer. However neither are anywhere as scarce as the 1862 fat 8. Interesting to see that NGC have listed this minor variety.

AU is about VF in the UK so retail £8 to £10 slabbing it costs more than the value of the coin.

'I said Ethel?'

'But it was too late, she'd already been mooned!'
