1854 Penny - Ignorant Question

Recommended Posts

Please forgive me, I bought this coin on a bit of a whim knowing very little about Viccy pennies, copper or otherwise! Seemed the right combination of price, grade, and eye appeal at the time!

I am an English Milled Silver circulation collector who likes to dabble in other areas, including everything else, to keep it interesting! Nothing like having a focus!

I believe this is a copper Viccy penny, OT and wide colon to DEF, I am just hoping for confirmation of that (or otherwise) and comments as to appearance and grade :)

It has a fairly red lustre in hand, which is good (I believe) and doesn't come out too well in the pics. 18.7g.

Thanks for any comments :)

Gosh, you'll have to forgive me for this, Paul, but that looks like it couldn't possibly have a smidge of lustre left? Is that a really bad photo, or are the surfaces as abraided as they appear in the image?

I hope you don't mind me being frank? :(

Looks the same on the laptop! I'd feel reasonably confident (?photographs) in saying that the lustre has long since gone on this one, just some residual stuff around the devices?

I can dig the Peck out tomorrow, but I'm sure you'll get a full attribution well ahead of then.

They are lovely coins, I prefer them to the bronze issue. :)

Wide colon and OT but it looks cleaned. Maybe partially retoned, but it is too reflective in the fields as well as on the relief detail to be original colour. The top of the rim also looks similarly bright.

Frank opinions is what I want and expect! It was only a few quid, and doubtless cleaned, but does look attractive in hand ... just wondered what people thought ... knew I hadn't got any kind of bargain or anything!

Thanks Rob, yes it's very bright, I'll probably keep it for a while though, I'm sure I wouldn't entertain it if this was my collection focus area!

I should stick to what I know I think, until I have researched other areas!

That's the big problem though isn't it? Ultimately, you have to dip your toe in the water!

No-one could ever describe the colours red or blue to someone who's blind!

The coin has definately been cleaned at one time or another, which brings out every circulation contact mark on the rim, and shows on the fields also. The Queens hair is especially strong, however, and adds to beauty of the coin. In time the cleaning will tone, and it will be a much nicer example. Without the cleaning taken into effect, I would put the coin at GVF...maybe better. A little would have to be deducted for the cleaning...or at least note it as being cleaned.

I would not value that coin as much more than £12 or so , you say lustre is still present , its not clear on the coin at all if it is or not .

This is quite a common problem with some copper and bronze coins i have put many a coin on ebay and had to say that it has lustre traces but they don't show on the scan.

Try getting hold of a nice coin in the £60 to £100 price bracket and trade this one in.

I agree coin is gvf and lightly cleaned.

Not to take over the OP, but advice required in this coin, grade and overall general thoughts. On reflection i should have put this in the "more pennies" thread if anyone can move it

Another attempt to show what I meant by the coin having some lustre! I will move on and concentrate on my main focus! Thanks for all the input!
