Once more I'm in the dark! Could this be a bronze of Tibet? I can't read the legend (of course!) but the lion looks very like those shown in "World Coins" on coins of the 20th century, but this looks hammered to me. Any thoughts?

The Tibetan coins all have a "snow leopard" with a split fan tail, whereas your kitty has but a single strand of tail.

Thanks kuhli. I had doubts about the Tibet assignment but 'no speaka da lingo' doesn't help!! I can now label the thing. Any idea why it's so irregular being 1838 it must be milled!

It could be cast or hammered. It wasn't until the British set up proper mints in India that they were able to make coins to modern standards.
