Need help identifying an 1818 UK George III Penny "like"coin

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

New to this, so please tell me if I am in the right group or not

I found this coin in a coin lot I purchased recently - It is the size of a penny coin and as I know there was no pennies struck in that year for George III, I had difficulty identifying it.

The coin measures 32mm across and weighs 11.9g (my scale might be slightly off).

I have uploaded pics of the coin

Thanks

A contemporary forgery of a G3 halfcrown. Originally the copper core would have been covered with a silver wash to pass it off as the real thing.

There are literally millions of forgeries issued into circulation in George the thirds reign , it was considered a very serious offense to pass them on in this reign that saw off napoleon and the french revolution .

If they had taken over from the circulating coin it would have had a very serious effect on the economy
