Whitman Folders

Hi, as a new member, I thought I'd ask what is maybe a silly question.

My dad collected coins, and got me interested as a boy. Now both my parents have passed away, I have inherited his collection.

What I want to ask is, a lot of coins are stored in Whitman folders, the blue cardboard type. I notice the shillings and sixpences have a dark ring around the edge when I take them out of the folder. The copper coins appear ok. Should I be storing coins in these folders, and do they have acid in them?

I have recently ordered a beginners kit from Chris to hold some of the collection, this will place coins in trays.

Anyone got any views on Whitman folders?

They're convenient, but I wouldn't trust them for nice coins. I've taken bronze coins out of them that have been spotty on the side that touches the paper/card.

I don't suppose they even thought much about coin preservation and the chemicals in the card in the 60's.

If you want to keep the coins in albums, check the Lighthouse that Chris sells here:

That is my prefer method, with coin frames, I already bought a couple of them from Chris and I have to buy another one soon.

If what you want is to keep them in trays then Chris will be able to let you know what is the best one for your needs.

Leigh if, for any reason, you cannot do internet shopping from places like predecimal, WHSmith sell good acid-free coin folders relativly cheeply

Thanks for the replies.

As I figured, as Chris says they are convenient, but if they are going to mess up the coins they are not much use.

I think I prefer trays to folders or albums anyway.

By the way I am in the UK....
