Where to sell pre-decimal coins at face value

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have about £50 worth of 1947 to 1970 coins. I wondered if anyone knows if these can still be sold back to banks (there was an article in the press two years ago saying this could be done).

The NatWest in my home town doesn't know anything about it.

Does anyone know how to do it please?

Hi sjh. Not something I know anything about I'm afraid but maybe someone will.

In the meantime, here's an (the?) article. http://www.theguardian.com/money/2011/sep/09/old-coins-currency-minted-before-1947

But the article is from 2011 and I'm not sure if banks still do this. Why not send Chris (forum owner) a message and see if he has any more up-to-date info? Link through his profile:

SJI

Welcome

Bag them up in £10 face and sell them for £20.

Don't forget the 1/2d's fit into 2p slot machines.

480 1/2ds to £1

50 2ps to £1

Not that I would consider this.

At the rate they convert to decimal it would be a better option to sell them in bulk as older coin to a collector. I have some £90 worth of predecimal myself and it just sits in jugs although I did sift out the pre-1947 silver awhile back as I may sell it.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

I would like to sell in bulk to a collector but am worried that the postage costs might be prohibitive.

Peter: "Bag them up in £10 face and sell them for £20". - That would be wonderful... are you offering? We might be neighbours as I am in N.E. Essex.

"Don't forget the 1/2d's fit into 2p slot machines". - I couldn't possibly!
