I could be wrong, but i think he's took it badly, i hope you return fluke and try and at least listen to older and wiser heads.

I always thought honesty was the best policy, some people just hate you dissing their coins i guess.

We can be a little abrupt on here and tell non regulars what they don't really want to know , that is the hobby's problem as well and not only ours we will not waste time buttering people up and not telling them that a spade is a spade.

Coin collectors almost immediately know the value of a coin and its grade

If you don't stay Fluke you won't be able to join us in sniggering at the way Azda's iPhone subtly adjusts what he wants to say either. Flickr LOL :P

Agreed copper i think unless you've been here a while it can look a little unfavourable, but as you say, why butter something up when it does'nt look great it is less of a grade than the OP thinks, thats where it all goes tits up. I have to be honest though i think we as a forum collective have helped more people than we've pissed off :)

Oh and cheers Richard :)

Can you not read your own sentences and then imagine a complete stranger talking to you like that? The manner in which you are doing it is rude and condescending.

I have already stated I am new to collecting but you feel the need to tear every tiny detail apart, for what gain? why exactly do you feel the need to dominate my posts?, no one else has but you is doing that, yet I am the one with the problem here? how the hell do you work that out?

I was asking for a general valuation in a friendly manner, you are not NGC and I have not submitted a coin for grading and evaluation or "Expert" opinions have I?

Now I am happy to say I wont be returning to get to know you, I have plenty of other places where I do not have to deal with ego inflated people who feel the need to dominate someone on a forum knowing full well they are new to the hobby.

what a great asset you are to predecimal forums.

:(:(:(

MRD,

You make the point very well. Disappointing but sadly not unexpected.

Mark.

I am sad about this, what can we do to come across as more open and less daunting to newbies?

How do you break Someone in gently Paul? If they don't want to listen Do we keep banging our heads against a Brick Wall? A novice who apparently graded accurately is an extremely rare commodity. I only mentioned his grade and Off he went with a little help from Nordle. Do we gently let them down or Tell it like it is?

When i first jumped onto this forum i felt let down by sellers who toll me a coin was X grade when it was'nt, i used the info to enhance my knowledge, its a hard learning curve for some people but you either use the knowledge you gain here or you spit the dummy out and have a hissty fit. I'm an adult not a child, i can handle someone telling me they don't like a coin i may have bought or that in their opinion the grade is'nt right, but at the end of the day, i buy a coin to Suit me and no one else.

Some people should just grow a pair and stop being too sensitive, its a piece of metal ffs.

I'm also curious about your post Mark, what is it you expect when you say "its sadly not unexpected"?

I think it's just a first impression thing, not suggesting anything other than a very gentle and warm welcome to anyone who is new, some of whom will find it daunting to join a site like this, with its Forum Gods an' all!

After that, there is normally some softening of the 'do I really belong here?' factor. So I am talking about welcoming someone gently to our Forum, not about the specifics of grading :)

Paulus,

Nicely put.

Dave what I'm referring to is the lack of 'graciousness' at times.

I'm not suggesting that views should not be exchanged even robustly. But that can always be done in a way that dignifies others.

I still clearly remember my entrance onto the forum, right on the tail-end of the 'Bullion Smelting Saga,' which was as hot a period as I can remember on here!

And quite innocently I joined to ask the question 'is it legal to smelt silver coins'? Oh, boy, did that bring the house down! My first knock-back came from Nick! I laugh about it now, and feel thankful I hung on in there...I would've missed a great deal otherwise!

I feel certain Fluke will take a look in, just like I did...c'mon Fluke, it's a great place to learn! :)

I find it strange he went mad and said I was wrong with the coin being cleaned , unless he is 135 years old (very unlikely) he will not have been the only person to own the coin so how can he state categorically that it's never been cleaned .

In fact the coin looks like its been cleaned a good seventy or eighty years ago and is toning down so it has not affected the value that much to most collectors maybe knock 33% off

Well i don't Understand why he went ballastic either. Paul you mentioned wie should'nt mention grade but it was he who Said he bought the book, graded his coin accurately and was still a novice, for me those things don't to Hand in Hand, grading and novice.

I only offered an opinion on his grade, what would Happen if no one Said anything and let him rum Riot with £0000s of pounds? He'd be onto a loser before very long. During the course of the thread, I did say welcome to the forum, but he just went off on a tangent to make himself look picked on, I was'nt picking, I was replying to his more bitter posts. I think he was extremely niave and thought people were picking on him and not the faults that we picked up on the coin, there is a difference.

I would have hated to see his reaction if he had shown us a counterfeit coin that he thought were genuine

I suppose we all learn in life from the "school of hard knocks" and in the end , we are all the same fish in a barrel ,so if one fish jumps out it learns it's lesson by dieing on the floor very painfully gasping for breath.

Back to the original coin, unfortunately it is the commoner type of 1881H farthing, Cooke Type A (My Reverse type 1). The H is lower in the scarcer variety, however they often do get confused by the description H to the left. Judging from the photo I don't think the coin has been cleaned, but given the fact that it is the more common variety, the value would only be a few pounds.

As for grading, definitely VF, marginally maybe a bit better

Don' get too put off by the friendly welcome here...it is all part of the initiation!!

ALL THIS FUSS OVER A £3 COIN !!!!

The 'fuss' is hardly about the coin, it is about the way members of this forum demonstrated singular lack of tact and encouragement towards a self professed novice coin collector who was asking for our assistance, and it is not edifying to see the main protagonists' attempts at self justification after the event. Truths can be told in such a way as to avoid being challenging or demeaning, if the desire is there. As a relative newbie myself, over the last few months I have come to know the various characters on this forum, and their likely approach to a topic, from whom a rant is likely and from whom a more considered opinion, and I wouldnt argue that one is less acceptable or necessarily less instructive than the other, but I do know which approach would get me more engaged in the hobby and the forum and give me the opportunity to learn.

Is the forum to be merely a battleground between established personalities, verbally and numismatically, or is there a place for encouraging beginners?

I am sure members who have thick skin and have grown a pair will not be offended by this suggestion.
