Not a coin

Recommended Posts

I have what I could call a commemorative coin, which I don't know much about. I wondered if anyone here would be able to help me.

The metal is made of is gold looking, whether it is or it isn’t gold, I have not a clue.

It’s diameter is 25 mm, in one side it had written from down up “MONTREAL†just in the middle of the “coinâ€. At the right there is the number 76 on top of an Olympic flame. To the left there are some buildings.

At the other side of the “coin†there are the Olympic circles with “MONTREAL 1976†on top and “XXI JUEGOS OLIMPICOS†at the bottom of the coin.

It surprises me that it is in Spanish the “Juegos Olimpicos†means “Olympic Gamesâ€, so I guess it is not Canadian.

I am trying to take a picture, but I am unable to get a clear picture with my digital Camera, it is a 3.2 Megapixels… Any instructions in taking pictures of coins would help.

Anyway, anyone has an idea what this is? Any information about it would be very much appreciated.

There is enough in your description to suggest that this is a commemorative linked to the Montreal Olympics of 1976. It sounds more like a medal to me; a commemorative coin would usually have a denomination on it because it would still be legal tender.

The presence of a legend in Spanish points to hispanophone country, not necessarily Spain itself. It could easily stem from e.g. Mexico or one of the hispanophone countries of South America.

Thanks!

I know is not a coin, that is why I wrote "not a coin" in the title, but just in case anyone knew anything about this type of medals or there where any catalogs and the like...

Chris, I didn't want to bother you with this directly, as it is not a coin and you are with too much already... in any case if 1 day I managed to get decent pictures of the "medal" with my camera, I'll send them to you for you to give me any info if you have it.
