A nice W3 crown around the £800 mark is a little bit illusive. It's a price range where you can buy average or great, depending on the day, so I'm being patient on his behalf!

H5 is no better or easier a find between HG and Penny!

I haven't browsed yet either (except their highlight preview), but I totally agree re a W3 crown, seems to me they can range from £300 to £2000 for apparently similar grades and eye appeal, based on the pics alone. So maybe a series to see 'in-hand', or where you can view in hand from a dealer 'on approval' is what I have concluded so far. Distance buying one from an auction would trouble me unless the pics were extensive and excellent.

I've always wanted an H5 example, perhaps that's just the Shakespeare/Agincourt factor, but I am not going back that far into hammered just yet

That doesn't surprise me, in my early days (before I joined the Forum) I was persuaded to buy a Henry V Calais Mint (yeah, right!). Agincourt was mainly luck I think, but that Shakespeare speech is very stirring, my favourite being the Kenneth Branagh version. Talking of military brilliance (or lack of it !) is he also interested in any English Civil War stuff? Or Waterloo?

Well, pretty strong on 1838-1970 but pretty much have everything by date, excepting an upgrade or two - none here....

I have identified four post 1838 sixpences that interest me. But there is only one which I would be disappointed in not winning. The other three are 'nice to haves'.

1860 penny double bar to A in VICTORIA .......... NVF with an estimate of £25 - £75.

The coin is cgs Uin 35137 and graded POOR 5

The c.g.s price is £1 on there website valuation.

Luckily there isn't a great deal of money involved, but that isn't really the point ... this is just silly, isn't it??

The very same company (effectively) that has slabbed and graded this coin as CGS 5 (poor) decides to sell it in their OWN auction with a description of NVF and an estimate of 25 TIMES their OWN valuation!!!

Does the owner/seller of the coin have a say in the auction description?

So all the penny people have done their homework and decided it isn't worth bidding on. It is no different to seeing an optimistically priced piece of tat on ebay and disregarding that too.

Maybe someone wants an example. Paying £24 over the odds is not excessive if it gets you what you want. I've certainly paid 10x that amount over the odds to get a coin I badly wanted, and fully accept the consequences of potentially not making a profit when sold. I have also paid under the odds, similarly without any guarantee of getting my money back.

Is it bad for the hobby? I doubt it, because the completely uneducated (numismatically speaking) person who wants to pick up 99p pennies is probably sourcing them from eBay and very unlikely to be buying at a regular auction. It should also be borne in mind that they are quite likely paying over the odds on eBay too.

Indeed, simply the silliness of the auction company whose graders will have also graded this coin, describing it as both NVF AND CGS 5 (poor) ... and looking at the pics it is certainly nowhere near fine!

But I take Rob's point too, someone may well be prepared to pay £25 or more for a certified slabbed example, which means the auction estimate is ok! I guess!!

Ok as far as wear and damage goes, but clearly dipped as alluded to.

Should be okay I think, if it stays within the estimate range. Some eye appeal for me, although not too keen on the streaky marks on the Obv.

I you see a coin described as 'bright', this is often a euphemism for dipped or cleaned (I think!)
